Tops is pleased to present Jim Buchman's Untitled sculpture from 1971. This is one of twenty hanging rubber and steel sculptures Buchman made in 1971 and one of two that are extant. The sculptures evolved from more specifically anti-Vietnam War pieces. The rubber of the truck tire inner tubes is sandwiched between two cold-formed, steel, skeletal shapes (which are inflexible) and dictate how the flexible rubber might hang to suggest remnants of muscles, tendons and organs. This is the first time the work has been publicly exhibited.
Jim Buchman is a sculptor working in Memphis. He has participated in two group shows at Tops: Voice of the Turtle and Island States. This exhibit is at Tops Madison Avenue Park gallery. The gallery is a vitrine-like space that is always on view, but not a space that you can physically enter. There will not be an opening for this exhibit, but feel free to view at any time of day or night.
